Viral marketing is a form of marketing that relies on word of mouth over the internet. It is highly cost-effective and with a bit of clever thought you can reap the rewards from viral social marketing with ease.
Viral social marketing often works because of a variety of reasons, many of which differentiate it from the conventional marketing that costs marketers tons of cash.
Here are a few things that make viral social marketing so great and why it often works
- It often provides people who come into contact with the marketing often find it enjoyable to experience
- The thing that’s being marketed to people often is directed well enough so the person can use it
- The marketing that the person has seen is highly unconventional and different to what they would normally see.
- There is often a benefit to watching or encountering the form of marketing.
As you can see viral social marketing is not like the normal form of marketing-, yet this does not mean it is any less effective. As mentioned before the marketing relies on word-of-mouth in terms of spreading the word. This could occur in any of two ways-
- Active- Where it relies on the person actually doing something to spread the word e.g. ‘Digg it’
- Passive- The word spreads through the user actually just using the product- like hotmail did in their emails.
